This sunday begins the second half of an unusual season and before playing the game wich will make enter every teams the last straight line, here is AFC ranking
(only 8 first places).
The AFC is led by the only undefeated team, the Indianapolis Colts with a perfect 8-0 record. It seems that Tony Dungy retirement has no consequence on Colts' results. Peyton Manning had to deal with few changes in
his offensive line wich is very important in pass protection. And apparently, no big deal. The Colts can also rely on an athletic defensive first row with both defensive ends Dwight Freeney (photo
below n°93) and Robert Mathis who know exactly how bring an intense pressure to opponent's thrower.
Second, the Denver Broncos (6-2), they started their season by 6
victories under new head coach Josh McDaniels (photo below)
. This guy
brought a very different philosophy far away from the Shanahan's one. He is less conservative in his schemes, he rebuilds a new team with many new names plus, with numerous talented young players
like Eddie Royal or Knowshon Moreno, they deserve this place. They lost Jay Cutler but ex Bears' quarterback Kyle Orton shines in his new team. During the 6 first games he threw just one
interception, unfortunately for him he was picked off twice against the Steelers.
At 3rd place, with a 6-2 reacord, the Cincinnati Bengals, this season, they show a complete different face wich is actually worthier of their potential.
At 4th place, the New england Patriots still with a 6-2 record, they stay on 3 straight wins with one of the bigggest in NFL history 59-0 against the Titans on week 6. Brady (photo below
n°12) threw 6 touchdown passes and set a new NFL record for most touchdown passes thrown in one quarter with 5. Those who had doubts on Pats' thrower physical abilities have the best reply to their
question.
At 5th place, the defending champions Pittsburgh Steelers last
team with a 6-2 record. they stay on 4 victories in a row. The last one was against the Broncos. They've got a productive running game with the emerging of halfback Rashard Mendenhall (photo below
n°34).
Still a rough defense against the run (NFL 2nd). They also steal many balls with Troy Polamalu.
However, you can easily see how hard it is to be productive each year and it's maybe harder for the defending champs because everybody waits for them and wants to show what they are capable of
against the previous Superbowl winners.
At 6th place, the San Diego chargers with a 5-3 record, many talented players as LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates or, Vincent Jackson (photo below n°83) but things don't work as it
should.
At 7th place, some surprising Houston Texans with a 5-4 record despite their average results, the Texans show good things. Quarterback Matt Schaub becomes a real leader.
At 8th place, , the Jacksonville Jaguars with a 4-4 record, the AFC south has 3 of his 4 teams in 8 first places of this conference.
Big surprise, the Tennessee Titans, a team wich won the AFC south last season and began by 9 straight wins in 2008, have to deal with a 2-6 record plus, they are 14th on 16 teams in this
conference.
Some good teams as the Baltimore Ravens, they had lost against the Steelers last season in the AFC championship
game, or the New York Jets have average results, both teams have a 4-4 record and are just behind the Jaguars, they're currently 9th and 10th.
Even if it remains 8 ball games to play, only the 4 winners of each division and 2 Wild card, non division winners with the best winning percentage of the conference will reach the
Playoffs.
